Eating Out Made Easy

The goal of counting macros is to create a healthy, sustainable relationship with food. If we told you that you could never eat out again, you would think we were crazy (and we don’t blame you!).

Measuring, tracking, and estimating while you’re out gets easier as you go. Initially, looking at a restaurant menu and trying to figure out which meals fit into your macros causes some people to throw their entire nutrition plan out the window for the night.

Trust us, you will be pleasantly surprised at how accurate you can be by estimating and being aware of your choices. Remember, the only way to build a skill is through practice.

Planning and tracking ahead of time is the key to being present in your environment. Head to dinner with the intention of enjoying the atmosphere and focusing on where you are and the company you’re with.

  1. Plan Ahead. Look at the menu ahead of time. Pick a meal you know you will enjoy and can track relatively accurately.

  2. Estimate Portion Sizes. Estimate portion sizes and pre-log them into your tracking app. Overestimate to allow yourself some wiggle room to adjust when when your meal arrives.

  3. Be Honest With Yourself. If you couldn’t make a double bacon cheeseburger with fries fit into your macros before, let’s be honest…you can’t make them fit now.

  4. Special Requests. There are so many ways to create your own meal at a restaurant. Sub fries for steamed veggies. Sub the beef on your burger for a grilled chicken breast or turkey burger. Ask for dressing and sauces on the side.
